Who this service is for

Parental coordination is a child-focused service designed for separated parents who already have Court Orders or parenting plans in place, but who continue to experience ongoing conflict, communication difficulties or difficulties implementing their arrangements in day-to-day life.

Unlike Family Dispute Resolution, which creates parenting agreements, parental coordination helps parents put existing agreements into practice, reducing conflict, improving communication and keeping children's wellbeing at the centre.

This service is particularly suited to parents in high-conflict situations where frequent disagreements are affecting the children and making co-parenting difficult for all involved.

Common situations we help with

Conflict over the day-to-day implementation of parenting plans
Communication difficulties between separated parents
Disagreements about children's activities, school and health
Difficulties around changeover arrangements
Recurring disputes that keep returning without resolution
Supporting parents to reduce children's exposure to conflict
Building more functional co-parenting communication

How parental coordination differs from mediation

FDR and parenting mediation focus on creating an initial agreement. Parental coordination is an ongoing, structured process designed to support the practical implementation of that agreement over time. Sessions are future-focused and solution-oriented rather than focused on the past.

It is important to note that parental coordination sessions are generally not confidential in the same way as FDR. We discuss this clearly with all participants at the outset. Parental coordination is available as individual sessions or as a structured program over a set period.

What the process looks like

1
Initial consultation

We discuss your situation, the existing parenting arrangements in place and whether parental coordination may be appropriate for your circumstances.

2
Individual intake sessions

We meet separately with each parent to understand their perspective and explain the process and its expectations clearly.

3
Coordinated sessions

Structured, facilitated sessions focused on practical communication, implementation of arrangements and reducing conflict. Sessions can be individual or joint depending on what is most appropriate.

4
Review and continuation

Progress is reviewed regularly. The duration and structure of the program is tailored to each family's needs and circumstances.

Please note: Parental coordination sessions are generally not confidential in the same way as FDR. This service provides general information only and does not constitute legal advice. Seek independent legal advice for your specific situation.
